LEARNING AND TEACHING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA: AN EXPLORE SATURDAY at the Villa Saint-Martin
Facilitated by Fr. Sylvester Tan, S.J. Saturday, January 18 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
(9451 Gouin Blvd. West, Pierrefonds, H8Y 1T2)
Saint Ignatius of Loyola explained his experience by saying that God taught him as one teaches a school child, and Ignatius taught his own disciples to teach others as they had themselves been taught by God. At the same time, Ignatius’s own pedagogy emphasizes that all a Jesuit, or any teacher, can truly be in a Christian sense is a teacher’s aide, since Jesus himself declares “they shall all be taught by God” (Jn 6:45; cf. Is 54:13).
Join us for this Saturday workshop in which we will reflect on the ways that God teaches us and the way that we are called to share with others what God has given us. Teachers and catechists can benefit especially from this reflection on divine pedagogy, but the course can also be of great use to students, parents, and anyone who accompanies others.
Fr. Sylvester Tan, SJ, has spent most of his life in educational environments as a student or a teacher. As a young person, he was very active in outdoor education programs, and served on the National Explorer (Venturing) Cabinet for the Boy Scouts of America from 1996-1998.
